If you want to start gardening, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to own a garden. This statement may sound a bit peculiar at first, but let us introduce you to Aquaponics and help you understand the concept of apartment gardening. The concept of Aquaponics is based on the creation of an environment where fish (talapia) interact with plants and create the much needed fertilizer for these to grow. The plants will also clear the water, so you don’t need to worry about the floating droppings. You can build such a system right inside your home, whether you live in an apartment or a house, but first you need to buy some PVC and drill a series of holes in them. Great idea. Think I will try and use small clay pots in lieu of plastic which will get brittle and crack easier. Additional supports needed as the clay pot will be heavier than plastic cups.

All very well, but these are starters – this isn’t a garden. No way can you grow carrots, potatoes, onions, whatEVER in these – only start them.
You can’t grow root crops in an aquaponic garden. It doesn’t grow correctly, and I am told it doesn’t taste correct either.
What do you do when the plants get bigger? Won’t the root system get cup bound? Is there a way to modify the design to grow anything bigger?
Remember clay will also swell with water 🙂
