    We used this method in the army, but the part where the cup in this case is heated we only gave a very small opening. Essentially the fire was burning under the ground and the flames came out of a small thin opening in the ground on top. This way the heat was really concentrated and you could kill the fire really easy in case of emergency by just stepping on it. We dug 1 hole but not straight down but diagonal with the wind the direction. I wish I could draw it for you 😉

    Wish we could still use it, our command says its to dangerous and better to just huddle up with another soldier to keep warmth.

    Must make sure no roots or rotting logs are near the fire hole, underground root fires are very hard to put out or see when they are being sneaky….be careful with this pit!! I have seen many places where campfires have burned roots underground, takes a very long time to out!
